Gabriel Hummerstone

Monumental Stonemason
Vernacular lettering inspired by C18th slate headstones of North Devon and North Cornwall.  Also influences of John Baskerville, C18th Writing Master, Gravestone Carver & Founder of the eponymous typeface still widely used today and unsurpassed for elegance and legibility; the Uncial lettering of The Age of Saints (the so called Dark Ages); Lindisfarne Gospels, Book of Kells & St Teilos Gospel and David Jones.
Letters are mystical signs and often tell us more than we are able to read.  To carve letters in stone is intrinsically optimistic: somehow, somewhere it all makes sense. The letter is holy as the inseparable element of the Word which is above and before all.  Lettering then as Christian meditation and carvings in slate and marble ditto, sloughed-off skin, signs of a traveller passing, blazes on a tree: pointers to states of mind in this journey of mortal life: a slate carved Mother and Child out of an old billiard table, life size contemporary Christian art living on the margins being made purely as an act of faith, unwanted by anyone but the maker.
Come and see!
