Jonathan Cox
Ceramics
I love using the medium of clay as a canvas just as a painter would do. This gives me an opportunity to express my long-held interest in the natural world. The shapes I use evolve from folding white earthenware clay to create vessels varying in sizes and also press moulding clay into interesting shapes. One of the unusual features of my work is a fine line of slip that is piped over the design before the initial firing. I like the liveliness it brings to the design. I also use lustreware, a technique which has intrigued and fascinated me since I began my career over 30 years ago. Studying this difficult and elusive craft has the element of addiction about it. Endless disappointments strangely seem to strengthen resolve to find the perfect shimmering iridescent lustre. Over time I have managed to learn some of the secrets of this elusive mode of ceramic decoration.
