Justine & Alan Burgess
West Wales Willows
Justine and Alan both started off their working lives as engineers but now work full-time growing, selling and weaving willow on their smallholding in Gwernogle. They currently have about 250 varieties in the collection.
The craft of willow weaving is important to the family and they want to ensure it continues in the future, in particular traditional designs such as the Welsh Cyntell agricultural basket and the Spanish Zarzo basket. Using mixed media in weaving is something Justine has been exploring. They believe basketry still has a place in the modern world, especially as society looks to reduce its use of plastics.
Justine focuses on weaving and teaching, while Alan can be found wrapped up in all weathers harvesting and planting willow.
As well as visiting the studio, you are welcome to look around the willow fields and the range of willow structures. Wellies required!
